Health and Fitness
Our goal is to promote a Healthier Community by improving the activity and mobility in children. Since 2009, over 2,300 pair of new shoes have been purchased and presented to Elementary-aged children. Physical inactivity of children has shown to be a serious cause of obesity. H.E.A.R.T. has partnered with local elementary schools to provide athletic foot ware for the 83.6% of children who face economic exclusion, homelessness, lack of access to play areas, mental and physical disability, as well as, lack of parental involvement. For some children in our area, an adequate pair of shoes determines whether they participate in physical education, after-school athletic programs or become the victim of mocking episodes. Physical Education and athletic programs such as basketball, football, soccer, tennis and cheer-leading help promote leadership, discipline, good citizenship, and good sportsmanship. Sports are used as a platform to transmit a message to fight obesity
H.E.A.R.T. Organization, Inc. utilizes mentoring as a tool to deter gang participation, violence, juvenile delinquency, and reduce behavioral problems in the community. We introduce our mentees to events that are nurturing to help them reach their full potential. They are given the opportunity to learn in their skills and receive encouragement for their efforts and successes. Some of the valuable skills include: Decision-making, Problem-solving, Organizing/ Planning, Integrity, Working Well with Others, and Public Speaking. This type training fosters self-motivation, self-empowerment, and academic excellence.
We recognize that children are the proprietors of our great nation and community. Our Goal is to improve school attendance and influence high self-esteem through education. As a linking organization, we host Youth Summits, Workshops and Leadership Seminars that teach: Peer Pressure, Communication, Trust, Character-building, Time Management, Money Matters, Self-discipline, and Respect.
Through partnership with area nursing homes we have taken on an initiative to help improve the quality of life for the elderly in our community. Over the years, we have donated personal care items, air conditioners and clothing to senior citizens in need.
Additionally, we have provided funds to enhance the facilities where our seniors gather. Our objective is not only to improve the quality of life for our seniors but to make their lives as comfortable as possible.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Program & Breakfast
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Breakfast was the catalyst for growth of HEART Organization, Inc. This was the signature event utilized, to gather the community and promote the need for social harmony by servicing those less fortunate. HEART has promoted this event for more than 30 years through the continuous support of our corporate sponsor, The Procter & Gamble Paper Products Company of Albany, Georgia.
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Breakfast began with a small group of concerned employees of Procter & Gamble in 1980 at a Shoney’s restaurant. It has since catapulted to occupying one of the largest facilities in Albany, Georgia and commanding its own 75-member MLK Commemorative Mass Choir. It is attended and supported by community leaders, civic organizations, businesses and residents throughout the Southwest Georgia area. They see this event as an opportunity to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. while supporting an organization that has proven to be fiducially responsible in helping those in need. HEART is a nonprofit 501© (3) organization that has been recognized by the KING FOUNDATION for its contributions within the community through the MLK Commemorative Breakfast and sponsored events.
Shoes from the Heart
In 2009, HEART expanded its services with a new initiative, Shoes from the HEART, which provides shoes to relieve the burden for disadvantaged families with K-5th Grade students. There are over 8,000 K-5th Graders in the Dougherty County School System (DCSS); statistics show that 83.6% of these children come from economically disadvantaged homes where quality shoes cannot be afforded. Since its inception, over 2,300 pairs of new shoes have been purchased and presented to the children. Our goal is to continue help advance education, combat juvenile delinquency and improve the personal development of a child (self-esteem, perseverance, empowerment, etc.)
The youth we serve face economic exclusion, homelessness, lack of access to play areas, mental disability, physical disability and lack of parental involvement. Shoes from the HEART will help these children be able to participate in physical education and after-school athletic programs such as basketball, baseball, soccer, cheerleading, etc. These type programs promote leadership, discipline, good sportsmanship, and help fight obesity.
Over the years, our donors have included: Sam's Club, Chick-Fil-A, Belk’s Department Store, Procter & Gamble, Hands of Hope Community Scholarship Fund and Enterprise Car Rental along with several churches and countless individuals. Nike Outlet in Locust Grove, Georgia worked exceptionally hard with us in prior distributions making the shoes affordable.
There are over 500 children in each of the 16 Elementary schools in Dougherty County. It breaks our hearts when we can barely provide 100 pairs of shoes to any particular school during our December distribution. During each event, we witness the teary eyes of children receiving new shoes as well as those not receiving shoes, due to lack of funding. We want to continue to help these children put their best foot forward! As a Charitable 501(C) (3) organization, we need your help to put a pair of brand new shoes on some deserving children feet. Some of these children have never had a new pair of shoes. From the bottom of our hearts, “THANK YOU”!
